And this is why I disliked Mal kicking River and Simon out in the film Serenity. Because it was like a slap to the face after all the development the crew had been through. ;__;

Well, remember though it was even more Simon’s decision than it was Mal’s.  Simon’d been pushing Mal to not involve River in the heist, and was feeling vindicated in his fears with the Reaver encounter.  (Not an unjust opinion from a protective older brother I suppose).  Simon then striking Mal was an act of mutiny - the fact Mal didn’t clean the floor with Simon was in my opinion Mal’s way of saying “Ya ain’t wrong, but ya ain’t right, neither.”  Remember too, Mal never said the words “I want you off of my boat.”  It was much more “You want off?  Shiny.  Go.”
